Signs You're Not Exfoliating Enough

Signs You're Not Exfoliating Enough

Most of us have a pretty average skincare routine. You wash, hydrate and maybe do a little makeup to highlight or improve the dull areas… Some feel exfoliation is one of those steps that you do once in a while, or sometimes forget completely.

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Our amazing bodies already shed their dead cells every 30 days or so. The frustrating part is, sometimes they aren’t completely discarded.

Here’s some signs you need to exfoliate more:

  • Your skin looks dull
  • Your pores are blocked
  • Skincare products aren’t working
  • Your makeup doesn’t look right
  • Signs of hyperpigmentation
  • Fine lines are more pronounced
  • Skin feels dry, flaky or bumpy

There are two types of exfoliation — physical exfoliation and product based exfoliation.

Physical involves using scrubs and washcloths to manually wash away dead skin, while the product based scrubs use serums like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to unglue the bonds between dead and living cells.

Alpha hydroxy acids are a chemical found in fruits, sugar cane, milk and pickled vegetables. They help peel away the surface of the skin so that more even colored skin can take their place.

Dermatologists recommend AHAs for all skin types including sensitive skin. If you have normal, dry, sensitive or mature skin, look for something with glycolic acid like you’ll find in this product.

But… How Often?

A reasonable number is 3-4 times per week, unless your skin is dry or sensitive. In that case, twice a week is probably the maximum.
