Should Everyone Exfoliate?

Should Everyone Exfoliate?

Does Everyone Need To Exfoliate?

It's a good question we should all ask.

You certainly can overdo it, but you can also under-exfoliate.

There's a number of factors to weigh including your age, the condition of your skin and the type of exfoliant you use.

Do I need to?

Our skin naturally exfoliates on its own by desquamating or turning over every 27 days, but as we get older, that process can break down. Done carefully, it's an important way to prevent acne, open up clogged pores and improve skin turnover. It also helps brighten a dull complexion and improve the absorption of active skincare ingredients.

What Happens if I don't?

A lack of exfoliation can contribute to acne breakouts, blackhead formation (i.e clogged pores). In the case of dry skin, under exfoliating can also prevent the absorption of moisturizers. It can feel like creams are just sitting on the skin and not hydrating.

Should I exfoliate more in the summer or the winter?

It really depends on your skin and your environment. In the summer heat, exfoliation can help clean up clogged pores and reduce the appearance of pores. In the cold winter months, exfoliation can remove dry skin and help retain moisture.
